Accessibility Statement
Great Lakes Shark Patrol is committed to making greatlakessharkpatrol.com usable by everyone, including people who rely on assistive technology. Observing freshwater sharks shouldn't require perfect vision, fine motor control, or patience for a broken interface.
Our Standard
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities and more usable for everyone.
Measures We Take
-
Semantic HTML structure so screen readers can navigate the site logically
-
Sufficient color contrast between text and background
-
Descriptive alt text for images, including sighting photos and protocol diagrams
-
Keyboard-navigable menus, forms, and the sighting log
-
Resizable text that doesn't break the layout
-
Clear, consistent labeling on interactive elements like the classification protocol tool
Known Limitations
We're a small operation, staffed largely by volunteer shark searchers rather than accessibility engineers. Some pages, particularly older blog posts and Instagram-linked content, may not fully meet these standards yet. We're working through them.
Feedback
If you run into a barrier using this site, tell us. Include the page where the problem occurred and, if you can, what assistive technology you were using. We'll look into it and aim to respond within 3 business days.

Third-Party Content
Some content is hosted or embedded from third-party platforms (Instagram, Amazon KDP listings, etc.). We don't control the accessibility of those platforms, but we choose to work with them thoughtfully.
